PUNE, July 31: Intensifying their hunt for dacoits, the Pune police have decided to launch round-the-clock checking of every private vehicle entering the city from Friday night.
Taking a serious note of the string of dacoities in the city and its fringe areas over past three months, the police had been checking vehicles entering Pune at night since April 22. However, deputy commissioner of police (crime branch) Ramrao Pawar today issued orders revising the arrangements.
The orders come in the wake of the dacoities in Kothrud and Chandan Nagar by ten gun-wielding men. Since the check on private vehicles entering the city in night has failed to curb dacoities, it is suspected that dacoits have been sneaking in the city while the security is lax at daytime.
The police will set up special posts at 15 strategic points for the purpose. Each post will be manned by two sub inspectors, four armed policemen and some unarmed policemen.
The posts will be located at Nigdi octroi post on Mumbai-Pune highway, Bhosari octroi post on Pune-Nashik Road, Dighi octroi post on Pune-Alandi Road, Marina poultry farm on Pune-Ahmednagar Road, Laxmi mandir at Hadapsar on Pune-Solapur Road, Satyapuram Vasahat on the road leading to Pandharpur, Annasaheb Magar College at Manjri, Bone factory at Kondhawa on the road leading to Saswad, Poonam petrol pump at Katraj on Pune-Satara Road, Warje junction of the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass and the NDA Road, Chandni Chowk at Pirangut, Wakad Phata on the road leading to Chinchwad, Pashan octroi post on the junction of Soos Road and Bavdhan Road, Baner octroi post on Baner Road and Vitthalwadi on Sinhagad Road.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the Hero Honda motorbike seized after it was abandoned by five suspected dacoits at Shikrapur on Wednesday night was stolen from Talegaon Dabhade on July 27.
