VADODARA, June 8: The Karelibaug police has registered a case of cheating against five people for making payment to a car dealer through fake bank drafts.

In a complaint lodged with the police, Amarbhai Mohanbhai Thakker of New Auto Deal, alleged that Bakul Chandubhai Shah, a resident of Manjalpur, purchased a Maruti Zen from him on May 22 last year for Rs 3,36,425 and made the payment through a demand draft of Bank of Maharashtra. As Shah was known to Thakker through a common friend, Thakker did not suspect anything foul and accepted the draft without much inquiry.

Again on May 29, Bakul connected Thakker saying he wanted to purchase another Maruti Zen before the Union budget fearing the price would go up after the budget. He gave a bank draft of the Union Bank of India of Kesod branch in Bhavnagar district.

Both the demand drafts were, however, found to be fake. When Thakker submitted them in his bank for encashment. He informed Bakul about it but the latter threatened him with dire consequences if he reported the matter to the police, Thakker alleged in his complaint.

Thakker then registered an FIR with the Karelibaug police. He has named four other people — Pratap Arjun Rajput, Buvnesh Chandu Shah, Kiran Praveen and Avinash Dithe — in the FIR for assisting Bakul in buying the vehicles.
