PHILLAUR, DECEMBER 8: Maharashtra youngster Amol Chauhan claimed three gold medals in rapid fire pistol in both men’s and juniors section, while Jaspal Rana ended with a team bronze in the open category on a dramatic day.

Chauhan came up with a good sequence to add three golds to the Maharashtra tally as he won both the men’s individual and team events. The youngster also won the junior section with a National record to boot.

Punjab’s TS Dhillon bagged the silver, the bronze went to Shyam Bali of Maharashtra in the mens’ event. In the team event, Maharashtra squad comprising Bali, Gani Shaikh and Amol Chauhan picked up gold with UP’s Ramendra Sharma, Anunay Yadav and Anshumali Diwedi taking the silver.

In the junior rapid fire event, Amol Chauhan’s record score was 551 erasing Ronak Pandit’s 543. The silver and bronze went to Pandit and Pemba Tamang.

Navy’s Mukesh Kumar, tiding over last year’s disappointment, took gold with 661.9 on the fourth day of the National Shooting Champinshipshere.

Pipped in the rapid fire by Jaspal Rana in ’98, Mukesh made amends. “Last year, I scored 659.2 and was almost sure of a bronze. But Jaspal (659.3) showed me the door with his impeccable shooting skills. This is a day of joy for me. Not only has my hard work paid off, I have won my maiden National gold after six years of efforts,” he said.

Rapid fire (juniors): Maharashtra 1573 (Amol, Abdul, Ronak), Army 1525 (Gurung, Tamang, Thapa), CISF 1444 (Kamal, Anubhav, Pawan).
