The VHP here today demanded that the Quran and Hadeeth be amended to delete those passages preaching hatred against non-Muslims.

VHP vice-president Giriraj Kishore, who raised the demand, said that the exercise was essential for ensuring permanent peace and harmony in the world.

He claimed that he had also offered to undertake a scrutiny of Hindu religious texts to knock off from them any portions considered offensive by another community. However, he pointed out, Muslim religious leaders had refused to reciprocate the offer arguing that no such revision was possible as the Quran was a holy book.

The VHP stand was obviously based on the Bangalore resolution of the RSS which said that the security of the minority community lay in the goodwill of the majority community.

Kishore suggested that a meeting of both Hindu and Muslim theologists be convened by the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) to scrutinise the scriptures of both communities so that all objectionable portions could be removed from them.

The VHP leader circulated a list of 24 verses from the Quran, which, in his view, fanned hatred against non-Muslims.
