CB, SBP enter quarter finals

CHANDIGARH, MARCH 14: Canara Bank and State Bank of Patiala entered the last eight stage in the men8217;s team championship of the All India Inter-Bank table tennis championship, which commenced here at the Sector 23 Indoor Table Tennis Hall today.

Canara Bank blanked State Bank of Saurashtra 3-0 while SBP scored an identical 3-0 victory over Bank of Baroda.

For Canara Bank G Ravishankar set the ball rolling by beating VL Pandey 21-18, 12-21, 21-18. In the second singles TS Ram Kumar8217;s CB experince enabled him to defeat J Jaiswal 21-15, 16-21, 22-20, and gave the eventual winners a 2-0 lead. In the decider Kunal Telang outplayed D Sarvaiya 21-15, 21-17, to enter the second round. CB will take on State Bank of Patiala in the quarterfinal tomorrow, which is expected to be a keen affair.

SBP players exhibited perseverance in their outing today and if they repeat their performance tomorrow against CB, the win would fetch them a place in the semifinal.

Defending champions Dena Bank are yet to open their account. They face Indian Bank in the quarterfinal tomorrow. In another quarterfinal match United Bank of India are pitted against last year8217;s runner-up Bank of India.

Union Bank is another team which is expected to make the last four stage. But before that, they have to overcome Reserve Bank of India in the quarters tomorrow, which have outstanding players in their folds. Earlier the meet was inaugurated by Rajesh Chabbra, Principal Secretary, Government of PunjabQuarterfinal line up: Dena Bank vs Indian Bank; State Bank of Patiala vs Canara Bank; Union Bank of India vs Reserve Bank of India; United Bank of India vs Bank of India.

Shine Star XI win
Shine star XI scored a fine five-wicket win over Punjab Civil Secretariat XI while Mohali XI beat Eleven Star XI by three wickets in the fifth Shine Star Cup cricket tournament here today.

After PCS scored 150 for 7, Shine Star XI batsmen played well to seal victory. Rimpy 35 and Sushil Siwach 28 were the top run-getters for the winners.
