If veteran socialist leader George Fernandes is not using his old Fiat any longer, it’s courtesy the Bombay Taximen’s Union. Founded by Fernandes, the union has taken care not to snap its umbilical cord with the trade union-turned-parliamentarian. Members, who drop in once in a while at Fernandes’s place, were aghast to see the former minister using the antiquated Fiat they had once presented to him. They decided to gift him a Swift. George hesitated, but was persuaded to accept the vehicle. Last heard, the dilapidated Fiat was being used by his Man Friday, Anil Hegde.
