Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s scheduled trip to China has been cancelled, but senior government officials do not know why. In a setback to the government’s efforts to promote Punjab’s industry abroad, leading industrial groups who were planning a trip to China to coincide with the CM’s visit have also backed out.
The two-nation trip to Canada and China was to start on May 19. The trip for Canada is still on for now, but questions have been raised as elections will have just ended when the CM’s delegation arrives.
Senior Punjab government officials who were to accompany the CM on the trip said they were told the China trip had been cancelled late on Friday night. A reason cited off-the-record is that the ‘‘time was inappropriate for the China visit’’.
Five industrialists, Rakesh Bharti Mittal, S.P. Oswal, Kamal Oswal, Rajinder Gupta and Harpal Singh of Fortis group, are also learned to have cancelled their trip.
‘‘For them, Canada trip does not hold any charm since the market is already saturated. China was a relatively new territory, but since it is not on the state government itinerary, there was no fun in their accompanying the CM at this point. They can easily reschedule their trip as per their own convenience,’’ industry sources said.
There are indications that the state delegation’s trip to China may also be rescheduled after a few months.
Meanwhile, 50 members will participate in the trade fair ‘Made in Punjab’, which will showcase products of Punjab’s small-scale industry in Toronto.
