8226; The 1073 emergency number will be activated this year

8226; Will begin with operations in big cities and towns that are equipped with proper trauma care facilities

8226; Will then cover 5,952 km on the Golden Quadrilateral and later the North-South, East-West highway corridor

8226; 149 primary health centres and district hospitals on national highways to be developed as major trauma care centres. Rs 1.2 crore has been given to each centre for upgradation

8226; Nearly 1 lakh road deaths recorded in 2005 and the number is increasing

8226; Rationale behind the emergency number system: ensure medical help to victim within 8216;golden hour8217; of mishap so chances of survival increase

8226; Emergency number will apply to road accidents, suicides, snakebites, burns, injuries and robberies on highways

8226; Ambulance fleet based on Geographic Information System GIS will enable quick access to accident spots and victims after accident is reported. Special call centre to handle 1073 calls. Language specific features to be incorporated for better communication
