The Calcutta High Court today rejected a petition filed by the Publishers and Booksellers Guild and refused to accept its plea on holding the annual Kolkata Book Fair on Maidan as a Public Interest Litigation.
With the division bench of Justices Bhaskar Bhattacharya and K K Prasad refusing to issue any order, the issue automatically gets referred back to the Army, the official custodian of Maidan. The book fair this time will be held from January 31 to February 11.
Last year, the court had given permission to hold the fair on Maidan after the state government gave an undertaking that it would be shifted to a permanent ground on the city8217;s outskirts.
In 2004, the High Court had asked all fairs to be shifted from the Maidan to save the green stretch from further environmental pollution. The Guild, however, moved the court this year again, seeking permission to hold the fair on Maidan.
After Friday8217;s court order the Defence spokesperson in Kolkata, Wg Cdr R K Das, said: 8220;We have made it clear to all concerned parties, including the Guild, that we will not be discriminatory in any decision we take. But we have to get the court orders in hand first and scrutinise it properly.
