London, May 18: England paceman Andy Caddick had Zimbabwe reeling in their Lord’s Test debut with a burst of three wickets for two runs in nine deliveries on Thursday. The touring side were in disarray at 67 for six at lunch on the opening day of the first Test.

Gripper was the Somerset paceman’s next victim. He beat the opener as he pushed forward and had him caught behind by Alec Stewart for one.

Former Zimbabwe skipper Campbell lasted only five balls before he was caught by Stewart off an inside edge without scoring as he played defensively forward to Caddick, who at that stage had three wickets for two runs in nine balls.

The rain which had been threatening finally drove the players off with Zimbabwe 27 for three from 13 overs, but the shower lasted barely 10 minutes and the ground was bathed in sunshine when the game resumed.

Goodwin and Andy Flower continued to repair the early damage caused by Caddick, but after they had added 38 they fell in consecutive overs.

Skipper Flower, having made 24 in 38 balls, got an outside edge to the fourth delivery of Giddins’ first over of the game and Michael Atherton held a straightforward catch at first slip.

The touring team declined to 48 for five when Gough found the outside edge of Goodwin’s bat and Nick Knight clung on to the catch at third slip, the Zimbabwe batsman having resisted for 64 minutes in making 18.

Giddins completed a miserable morning for the Zimbabweans when Whittall, who had made 15 in 18 balls, dragged a delivery off the bottom edge on to his stumps.
