JEHANABAD/NEW DELHI, MARCH 3: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday deferred a decision on the Bihar issue pending a proposal from the Home Ministry on various options before the government as the Presidential proclamation is unlikely to be ratified in the Rajya Sabha where the BJP-led coalition is in minority.

“The Union Cabinet informally discussed the Bihar issue and decided to wait till the Home Ministry sends its proposals on various options before the government,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Pramod Mahajan told mediapersons after the two-hour meeting.

Asked whether the Rabri Devi government would be restored or the matter would be referred to court, he merely said these were among the options before the government.

Mahajan said it was a “routine Cabinet meeting” at which Bihar issue was informally discussed but declined to divulge details about other issues saying Parliament was in session.

He parried questions on when the government would bring the statutory resolution on Bihar in RajyaSabha.

In the continuing series of caste wars in Bihar, meanwhile, People’s War Group (PWG) extremists gunned down four Ranvir Sena supporters in Bhimpura village of the embattled Jehanabad district — one-and-a-half km away from Narayanpur village where 11 Dalits were shot dead by Sena activists last month.

Heavily-armed PWG activists raided Bhimpura and dragged the four Ranvir Sena supporters to a nearby field where they were gunned down, police said.

The slain included three members of an upper-caste family — Manoj Sharma, Pramod Sharma and Ramswaroop Sharma.

Ranvir Sena and ultra-Left extremist groups are locked in a bitter battle for supremacy for a long time.

In the wake of the fresh violence, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) today called for immediate recall of Governor Sunder Singh Bhandari and revocation of the Presidential proclamation imposing President’s rule in Bihar.

“The rate of killings has shot up in the state during President’s rule,” RJD spokesman Shakeel Ahmed Khan said, urging the President to “immediately intervene” in the matter.

The Left parties, including the CPI and CPI (M), also condemned the killing while senior BJP leader Shushil Kumar Modi alleged that the killing was “part of a sinister design to defame Central rule.”

Over 221 extremists have been arrested so far under the combing operations launched by the police to eject extremists from central and south Bihar after imposition of President’s rule.

Inspector-General of Police (Operations) M K Sinha said a large cache of firearms, including 111 regular rifles, 31 pistols, 663 bombs and two hand grenades were recovered from the arrested ultras.
