
JULY 7: IWM Vijayalakshmi of Tamil Nadu, reigning National women8217;s champion, handed over a few lessons to eight top class junior players, surpassing them with ease at a time.
Vijayalakshmi, who was just one norm short of the WGM title, spared a day for her younger brothers and sisters, replying to their queries, giving invaluable tips and clearing their doubts.
She said she was happy to do her part in helping the children to prepare for the future and a number of them taking to the game was inspiring. She conducted a workshop for the trainees today.
The participants in the camp included five Asian championship gold medallists with three each from the boys and girls under the age group of 10, 12, 14 and 16 categories, he added.
Besides Abhijith Gupta, Under-10 Asian champion Abhinav Mekela AP, Rohit AP, Sai Sreenivas AP, CRG Krishnan AP, Akshay Rajkore Mah, VKV Sindhu TN, Rajadarsini TN, Nabeela Fahreen TN, Sujana AP, Priyadarshini TN and Nimmy George Ker locked horns with Viji but only Abhijit, Rohit, Akshay and Sindhu were successful against their strong opponents.
Later, talking to newsmen, Mr Deepak Heggan of Wipro said that the company had gifted one computer each to under-18 World champion R Aarthi and chess wizard Harikrishna. The company had plans to organise coaching camps at selected schools in important cities all over India, he added. The sponsorship of chess was part of Wipro8217;s human values in action.
Fide vice-president PT Ummer Koya said the camp has gone off very well and hoped that many of the participants would become champions. The session conducted by Viji would be of great help to the participants to prepare mentally for big games, he said.
Fourteen Indian and foreign GMs, IMS and IWMs would participate in the Wipro International Grand Masters Chess Championship to be held at Hyderabad from July 15 to 28, he added.
