On a call given by the central headquarters employees, the members of BSNL Employees Union held a massive demonstration in front of the office of General Manager, Ludhiana Telecom. The employees were demanding early release of bonus and minimum pay of Rs 10,000.
Addressing the gathering, Balbir Singh, circle secretary, and Balwinder Singh, district secretary, Ludhina unit, lamented that the management of the BSNL was not releasing the payment of bonus on the pretext that the profit of BSNL had reduced during the last financial year.
They further said that the employees could not be blamed for the reduction of profit. The profit has gone down mainly due to inability to provide connection due to lack of capacity of mobile lines. The stiff competition in telecom sector has compelled the management to reduce the tariffs, which has also resulted in reduction of total revenue for the year 2007-08.
The other reasons for profit decline are that the government has abolished ADC charges and reduction in USO Funds. The Union demanded minimum bonus of Rs 10,000 and release of bonus immediately as the festival season has started. Prominent among other speakers were Paramjeet Singh, district president, Hari Narayan Singh, Balbir Singh, Budh Singh and Tejinder Singh.
