NEW YORK, August 1: A Russian threat to withdraw four boxing finalists from the Goodwill Games in protest of decisions by judges and referees has led to the banishment of four tournament boxing officials.

Cuba8217;s Alfredo Toledo and Guatemala8217;s Macario Sosa, who served as both referees and judges, plus Swedish judge Per-Olaf Larsson and German judge Dieter Mika were removed from tonight8217;s title bouts.

Russian fighters lost 10 of 14 semifinal bouts. World 60kg champion Aleksandr Maletin fell 19-15 to Cuba8217;s Mario Kindelan and world 63.5kg runner-up Paata Gvasaliya lost 12-5 to American Ricardo Williams.

Two narrow semi-final losses annoyed the Russians. American Ebo Elder edged Dmitri Pavluchenkov 12-11 at 63.5kg when the Russian was denied a point on apparent equalising blow in the final seconds.

With the banishments, the pool of available referees and judges dropped from 13 to nine for the finals. The suspended foursome must undergo re-testing before they are allowed to officiate.
