GALLE, June 7: Sri Lanka’s bowlers spun a web around New Zealand batsmen to help their team score an innings and 16 runs victory today, the final day of the second Test, to square the three-Test series.

Niroshan Bandaratilake took five for 36 to help Sri Lanka come back strongly in the series after losing the first Test in Colombo.

The 23-year-old left-arm spinner, who took four for 47 in the first innings, picked up the wicket of Chris Cairns with the third ball of the final morning to begin the mopping up operation.

Cairns was caught at silly point by Hashan Tillekeratne for 16 without adding anything to the overnight total of 94.

Bandaratilake later also claimed the wicket of Paul Wiseman when he had the New Zealander caught by Tillekeratne for two. Bandaratilake finished with match figures of nine for 83.

Off-spinner Muthiah Muralitharan held sway at the other end, picking up the wickets of Chris Harris for nine and O’Connor for nought.

Muralitharan, who went wicketless in the first innings,finished with three for 24.

Daniel Vettori was run out for a duck to seal New Zealand’s rapid collapse.

The last five New Zealand wickets fell in 43 minutes for only 20 runs ending the match well before lunch break.

Mahela Jayawardena, whose 167 – his maiden Test century – put Sri Lanka in a possible winning position earlier, was awarded Man Of The Match.

The third and final Test begins at Colombo’s Singhalese Sports Club grounds on Wednesday.
