Four persons, including a woman and a girl, were injured in an attack by Bodo ultras who also set ablaze 17 thatched houses of Biharis last night in Upper Assam’s Golaghat district, police said on Monday.
A group of about 45 Bodos with lathis and swords attacked seven Bihari families at village Gelebil Telia under Barpathar Police station, injuring four persons, they said.
The attackers then set ablaze 17 houses of the seven families before fleeing. Police claimed that the attack was in retaliation to a Bodo person, Sailen Khaklari, being badly beaten, injured and looted while travelling in a train in Bihar on May 18 last.
On his return on May 28, Khaklari allegedly informed the people of his community about the incident in the train. This provoked the attack on the village last night, police said.
Police pickets have been posted in the village and nearby areas and committees formed to maintain law and order.
In October last year, ULFA militants had killed several Biharis in Upper Assam in retaliation to attacks on Assam railway passengers by Biharis in Bihar following disputes on Railway Recruitment Exam.
