NOVEMBER 26: Civic commissioner K Nalinakshan today said the civic administration will not concede to the demands of Mumbai Mazdoor Union MMU which has called for a strike of garbage transport drivers.
Nalinakshan said he had a meeting with the group leaders who also agreed that the strike was uncalled for and would put the city to inconvenience. Defence minister George Fernandes who visited BMC to collect the Kargil fund was also approached by the administration to prevail upon the union leaders to end the strike.
Meanwhile garbage collection in several parts of the city was affected following the strike by sixty percent of the regular civic drivers. The administration maintained garbage was being lifted by casual labourers and will further utilise machinery to lift garbage. The actual impact of the strike will be fully felt from tommorrow when 4000 drivers, cleaners and technical staff will participate in totality.
