RIO DE JANEIRO, May 5: The fans came to see the two fastest men in the world and they didn8217;t go away disappointed.
Donovan Bailey and Michael Johnson easily won the 100-metre and 200-metre races, respectively, at the Rio Grand Prix track and field meet today.
A crowd of about 10,000 fans at Celio de Barros track cheered the affable Bailey but booed Johnson, who had been deemed unfriendly by the local press. After Johnson won in 20.29 seconds, he was loudly jeered.
8220;I didn8217;t pay any attention to the crowd,8221; Johnson said. 8220;My job is to come here, run a race and go home.8221;
Bailey, competing in his first individual race of the year, won in 10:13. The Canadian blamed the early morning start for the disappointing time.
8220;I8217;m very capable of running under 10 seconds now, but I woke up at 8 this morning and I usually train in the afternoon,8221; he said.
The two stars will face each other in a 150-meter race on June 1 at Toronto. The winner will get one million dollars and the unofficial title of the world8217;s fastest man.
Kim Batten, the world record-holder in the women8217;s 400-metre hurdles, won in 54.58. 8220;With that time, I know I8217;m going to run a world record this year,8221; she said.
The biggest upsets came in the women8217;s competition. The Czech Republic8217;s Sara Kasparkova won the triple jump over world record-holder Inessa Kravets of the Ukraine with a leap of 47 feet, 7 inches. Kravets was second at 46-0. Ukraine8217;s Vita Pavlysh beat Olympic gold medalist Astrid Kumbernuss of Germany in the women8217;s shot put with a heave of 68-0 to 66-8 .
The meet was the first of the International Amateur Athletic Federation Grand Prix season.
