The Gujarat unit of BJP, in an open letter to the Election Commission, on Saturday sought action against Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party leader Digvijay Singh, following its complaint to the constitutional body on December two.
In an open letter, published in vernacular newspapers, Jayantilal S Barot, General Secretary, the state BJP said, “the entire country and BJP as a complainant want to know as to why the Election Commission has not so far taken any action against Sonia and Singh.”
The complaint comes in the wake of the remarks made by Sonia Gandhi at a rally in south Gujarat, where she referred to the state government as “merchants of death”.
Also, senior Congress leader BJP’s open letter to EC seeks action against Sonia, Digvijay Singh had talked about the “existence of Hindu terrorism in Gujarat” recently.
Barot said that on one hand, the notice issued to Chief Minister Narendra Modi (for his remarks justifying the encounter of Soharabuddin) was publicised through the media and, on the other hand, no steps were taken on the BJP’s complaint against Gandhi and Singh.
This only goes on to create an impression that the conduct of elections is not independent and impartial, the open letter said.
Barot says that Modi has not violated any Model Code of Conduct but still he has been issued a notice by the Election Commission.
“We have the right to know why the Election Commission is not taking any action on its complaint against Sonia Gandhi and Digvijay Singh,” he said.
“Nobody would agree that the remarks made by Gandhi and Singh did not amount to violation of the Model Code of Conduct,” he added.
The complaint filed against Sonia Gandhi can neither be ignored nor suppressed. She, as an Indian citizen, like anyone else in the country is liable to give a reply to the complaint, Barot has said in the letter, printed by Gujarat Pradesh BJP.
