The BJP, currently at the receiving end from other Sangh members for having given up Hindutva and swadeshi, today brought the common civil code issue back to the centre-stage suggesting a public debate on it.
The move, if aimed at placating the Sangh Parivar, is bound to prove counter-productive, for all NDA partners are bound to re-affirm their opposition to the BJP’s stand on the matter.
Listed among the three key contentious issues along with the Ayodhya temple and Article 370, it had been placed on the backburner by the BJP to attract support from other parties to form the NDA to grab power in 1998.
BJP chief M. Venkaiah Naidu chose the party’s Minority Morcha national executive meeting, to make the suggestion for a public debate.
He said: ‘‘When we talk of a uniform civil code, it is meant that all communities should have one law. Of course there should be a healthy public debate on the issue.’’
Naidu said that ‘‘a common civil code does not mean a Hindu civil code. It will be acceptable and applicable to all citizens in matters outside the domain of religion.’’
He conceded that the BJP had not been able to improve its appeal among the minorities and felt it was imperative to increase its base among all sections. Thus, partymen should take the Nagpur message of former president Bangaru Laxman to all sections.
