BJP men get into the act, assault engineer

An officer bearer of the state BJP8217;s youth wing allegedly attacked an executive engineer of the Irrigation department following a dispute over payment of a contract amount in Basti district on Monday night.

An FIR has been lodged and the police have seized a licenced rifle and a Scorpio vehicle owned by the accused BJP leader, Bhanu Prakash Mishra. He was yet to be arrested.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Basti, Ajay Shanker Rai said: 8220;Engineer Hari Narayan Singh lodged a police complaint that Mishra was pressurising him for the payment of his arrears pending with the flood division of the department.8221; The Scorpoio was attached with the flood division at Basti for over one year and the department was yet to clear the dues for its use, said Rai.

The engineer alleged in the FIR that Mishra arrived at his home on Monday and assaulted his domestic help when he did not allow him to enter inside.

When Singh came out, the BJP leader asked him to pay his dues amounting to Rs 2 lakh. The engineer alleged that when he asked Mishra to come to his office next day, he hurled expletives at him.

Singh also said when he tried to call up the police, Mishra fired two bullets in the air. Neighbours, meanwhile, gathered at the spot but Mishra managed to flee from the scene, leaving his vehicle and the rifle.

Mishra was a vice-president of the students8217; union of the APN Degree College at Basti before joining the BJP. There was no criminal case registered against him in the district, Rai said.
