New Delhi, May 7: India’s only soccer export to Europe, striker Bhaichung Bhutia, fired his second goal for Bury FC in a season-ending Second Division League match against Notts County at Gigg Lane on Saturday, according to information received here on Sunday.
Bhutia’s goal helped Bury FC settle for a 2-2 draw in their concluding match of the league. The Shakers accumulated 57 points from 46 outings (won 13, loss 15, draw 18) to finish at the 15th position in the 24-team league standings. The title was won by Preston, who completed their league engagements on 95 points followed by Burnley with 88 points.
It may be mentioned here that the diminutive Indian striker made history last month when he became the first player from the sub-continent to score a goal in the English league against Chesterfield. Bhutia however, has scored quite a few goals, including a hat-trick, for the Bury Reserves this season.
Bhutia, who played for East Bengal in the Calcutta league in the 1998-99 season, is expected to return to India during the off-season. However, he is certainly not joining any of the Big Two of Calcutta and is expected to shift to a bigger English club in next season.
The Sikkim-born player will be back at Gigg Lane for the pre-season training in early July.
INDIA PLAY MALDIVES:Stunned 1-0 by Sri Lanka in their second match, India will hope to collect full points against hosts Maldives in the four-nation Golden Jubilee Football Tournament at Male, Maldives, on Monday. Earlier, India were held to a 1-1 draw by SAF Games champions Bangladesh.
