Sunday’s action ended a Premier League season in which the real power in England moved to Chelsea, irrespective of who wins next weekend’s FA Cup final between Arsenal and Manchester United. A recap of some of the best and worst moments this season:GAME OF THE SEASON The best in all competitions was Chelsea’s 4-2 Champions League win over Barcelona at Stamford Bridge, featuring the hosts’ breakneck 3-0 lead inside 20 minutes, Ronaldinho’s sublime strike for the Catalans and captain John Terry’s second-half header which decided the tie on aggregate. But in the Premier League, Arsenal’s devastating 4-2 home defeat by Manchester United tops the list as it had everything — intense rivalry, goals, excitement and an emphatic result. For sheer entertainment, their storming 5-3 win over Middlesbrough at Highbury after trailing 3-1 takes the biscuit, while for goals it has to be either the 5-4 derby win over Tottenham Hotspur or the 7-0 demolition of Everton.PLAYER OF THE SEASON A hair’s breadth separates Rooney from Lampard left. Rooney deserves credit for coming into a club the size of Manchester United as a media-shy 18-year-old and setting the tone with a Champions League hat-trick on his debut. He has gone on to be United’s top scorer and is just managing to keep his volatile temper in tact. Mild-mannered Lampard is Chelsea’s top scorer — an even more impressive feat as a midfielder — and played a key role in their title triumph. Rooney has one edge over his England team mate. When the Liverpudlian is on the ball a ripple of excitement now goes through the crowd. For his consistency over the course of the season, though, Lampard is the deserving winner.WORST REFEREEING Decision Though he was not helped by his linesmen and was himself adistant spectator, referee Mark Clattenburg’s left decision not to award Tottenham a likely matchwinner at Manchester United in January was more than unfortunate. A speculative long-range shot by Pedro Mendes was fumbled by United keeper Roy Carroll and the ball landed a metre over the line before he scooped back out in what ended as a 0-0 draw.GOAL OF THE SEASON The recurring theme this season is Manchester United. The prize has to go to their teenage England prodigy Wayne Rooney top, the only argument being which to choose among his many fine strikes, including the brace in United’s FA Cup win over Middlesbrough. Best of all though was his stunning 30-metre volley last month against Newcastle.WORST BLUNDER West Brom striker Nwankwo Kanu looked destined for sole ownership of the worst miss of the season after his far-post error in a 2-1 defeat by Middlesbrough. But former team mate Fredrik Ljungberg of Arsenal rode bravely to the Nigerian’s rescue by hooking the ball over the top, about two metres from an open goal, in their FA Cup win at Bolton.
