Samajwadi Party member Jaya Bachchan was on Thursday reprimanded in the Rajya Sabha, with the Chair asking her to ‘behave properly’.

As P J Kurien, who was in the Chair, asked Virendra Bhatia of SP to conclude his remarks on the CrPC Amendment Bill stating he has overshot his time, Bachchan intervened saying her party colleague was interrupted and should be given more time.

However, Kurien said it was not an interruption, but an interaction between Bhatia and Home Minister P Chidambaram which was ‘useful’.

In between, Bachchan said, “You cannot point fingers at me.” Her remarks made Kurien angry, who said it was she who was “pointing fingers” and the member should “behave properly”.

After being made to sit, Bachchan retorted, “Ulta chor kotwal ko dante”.

As Bhatia completed his speech, he raked up the issue again telling the Chair “you have humiliated a senior member”.

Kurien said it was not proper for the member to level allegations against the Chair. In place of the allotted time of seven minutes, the SP member took 23 minutes, he said.

“It is not becoming of a member to make such an allegation,” Kurien said.
