NETSCAPE…A tense moment during the semi-final match between Bombay Engineering Group and Income-Tax on Thursday.

May 29: Bombay Engineering Group (BEG),Kirkee, made fewer errors than Income-Tax to make the final of the Savio Cup Invitational basketball tournament sponsored by Pepsi and Killer Jeans at the Don Bosco High School today.

BEG won 88-60 after leading 41-34 at half-time to contest tomorrow’s final against either Shivaji Park Gymkhana or Central Railway.

Income-Tax matched their rivals at the outset but failed to sustain progress. International Mahesh Naidu failed to receive adequate support up front with Stephen Rodrigues off colour and Clarence Menezes unable to get into a scoring act.

BEG, composed and fluent and wrested the initiative with quicker moves. Man of the match, Om Prakash, Atmaram Jat and Sanjay Sawant complemented the scoring of Gurmeet Singh as BEG moved inexorably towards a place in the final.

The Kirkee side gained a large lead as Naidu was restricted and even a spurt of four three-pointers by the lone battler failed to bring the contest alive.

Sood, Janeja advance

Subhash Sood (Delhi), Varun Janeja (Delhi) and Sanjay Sawant made the fifth round of the CCI Open snooker championship today.

Each achieved straight-set wins over Ramesh Sadarargani, Rohan Shaikh (Naik) and V Jagtiani respectively.

Kamal Judahan outclassed Sarang Shroff in the fourth round of the billiards competition making a break of 123 in he process of notching a 775-478 verdict.

In a close tussle Janeja (Delhi) kept professional Dhrau Sitarala 471-427 at bay.

Mohammed Azim seeded No 1 in the snooker event failed to make an appearance as did other players — Shakeel Ahmed, Shyam Jagtiani, Manoj Kothari and Harish Gandhi (MP). The tournament committee has suggested that action should be initiated against these players who having confirmed and accepted to pay have failed to meet their committments.

Holiday Inn rout SBI

Holiday Inn trounced State Bank 5-0 in the WIFA senior Division Football league at the Cooperage here today.

Sebastian Caldera, Philip Gonsalves, Dominic Vaz, Wallace Aranha and a self goal accounted for the hoteliers’ tally.

In a first division knock out tournament for the Colaba Young Star cup, Rizvi defeated Trade Indian 2-1 with Savio Laban and Felix Bretto scoring the winning goals for Rizvi. Jigar Fernandes reduced the margin for the losers.

Xavier’s outgun Andrew’s

Saint Xavier’s (Vile Parle) scored a close 6-5 win over St. Andrew’s (Bandra) in the Vincentian Youth Movement second inter-parish rink football tournament at the St Elias School ground (Khar), here today.

Nicky D’Souza, Sabby D’Souza and Nicano D’Souza scored a brace each while Neil Naronha 3, Conrad D’Mello andFlayton Flangan.

In another match, St. Blaise (Amboli) beat Our Lady of Egypt (Kalina) 8-7 (Alex Fernandes 3, Joseph Pires 3, Rubelin D’Souza 2 netted the goals while Edrich Lasardo 4, Pravin Gotad 2, Rupesh Sukhthankar reduced the margin for the losers.

Match abandoned

The opening match of the MDFA JC Maitra football tournament at the St Xavier’s Ground, Parel was abandoned after protesting PJ Hinduja Hospital players refused to continue playing.

With nine minutes to go Borivli Rangers, Hinduja’s first-round rivals led 2-1 with a controversial goal by Adrian Moraes. Hinduja players contended that Moraes handled the ball. As they protested to referee Xavier Farria Moraes slotted home.

Farrias allowed two minutes for Hinduja to commence playing before calling off the match. The tournament committee will decide on the fate of the match.PJ Hinduja took the lead in the 29th minute when Rajesh Rane scored but Anand Shanbag drew level in the 45th minute.

Ismail for Games

Controversial former Davis Cup reserve Asif Ismail has been included in the Maharashtra tennis team for the National Games to be held in Bangalore from May 31.

The teams (Men): Gaurav Natekar, Asif Ismail, Nitin Kirtane and Sandeep Kirtane.

Women: K Janaki, Aparna Sreeniwasan, Reetu Sethi and Mable Abraham.Former national player Narendranath will be the coach-cum-captain of the teams.

Dynamite victory

Young Dynamite scored a narrow one-wicket win over Don Bosco in the Indian Gymkhana Invitation cricket tournament, today.

Spurred by Susnil Tulaskar who hit 82, Don Bosco scored 197 all out in 30 overs but Young Dynamite reached the target in 29.1 overs in a tense finish.

Nilesh Soni hit 51 and Kartik Subramaniam 35 as Dynamite scampered home.

Brief scores: Don Bosco 197 in 30 overs (S Tulaskar 82, Siddharth Aiyer 41; Shoib Siddiki 3-27, Rajesh Moily 2-45) lost to Young Dynamite 201-9 in 29.1 overs (N Soni 51, K Subramaniam 35; Ashwin Matwade 3-38 and Vishal Pingle 2-35). M-o-M: Kartik Subramaniam (Young Dynamite).

MSSA D/N match today

The Mumbai School Sports Association (MSSA) is organising the Harris Shield Cricket Centenary festival day-night match at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday.

Set for a 3.00 p.m. start, the encounter will see top India stars Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli among others stars in action.

The Harris Shield has in its 100-year history produced players who have progressed to play at the very top level. Friday’s match will be played between a MSSA-Centenary Harris Shield XI and a MSSA-President XI.

Castrol India Ltd and Thums-Up are playing a major sponsorship role in the conduct of the match.
