Calcutta, October 30: West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu, who resigned on Saturday night after remaining in the saddle of the state for over 23 years, will continue as the chairman of his party’s co-ordinating committee, set up for better interaction with the government.

CPM politburo member Biman Bose said Basu would now lead from the front the party’s camapign for the Assemly election slated for next year. Bose said Basu would also play an important role in giving shape to the third alternative to both the BJP and the Congress in consultation with other all India leaders.

He said chief minister designate Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee would not deviate from the path shown by Basu for carrying out pro-people development policies. "Bhattacharjee is competent enough to carry out his job. He is a responsible minister and a party leader," Bose said. He, however, said it would not be justified to compare Bhattacharjee with Basu, who has 60 years of experience in politics. Bose said the first task of Bhattacharjee as chief minister would be to carry out smoothly the reconstruction work in the flood ravaged districts of the state. "We have no doubt that he will carry out his job effectively," Bose added.
