With the city police intensifying their drive against drunken driving and booking people outside bars, the Kerala Bar Hotels Association is all set to give a representation to the Home Minister and the Excise Minister, urging them to take steps to stop harassment of customers.
8220;We are not against police enforcing the law, but we cannot accept any move to carry out inspection on the doorstep of a bar. Everyone knows that a person coming out of a bar will be drunk. Kerala is a state which charges maximum fee for bar licence and such an act will have a bad impact on the industry,8221; said D Rajkumar, the Association state President.
The district wing of the association will meet within two days to discuss the crisis caused by the police action. 8220;If the police are going to book those driving their vehicles out of bars, then it is the hotel industry that is going to be hit. The state Government should make it clear whether after giving bar licence for Rs 23 lakh and getting such huge tax revenue from the hotel industry, they want to destroy it or not,8221; said Jose Mohan, working president of the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association.
Seconding the concern, District Secretary of Kerala Bar Hotels Association Pradeep said there has been a great fall in the revenue of hotels in the city due to police action.
8220;It will surely have an impact on the Sales Tax. We are not against police booking those violating law, but in a city like Kochi the police are bent on booking those leaving bars,8221; he said.
