Bangladesh’s main Opposition party today demanded an international probe into the huge arms cache seized in chittagong earlier this month even as the government dismissed as ‘‘baseless and irresponsible’’ allegations that Indian separatist camps were inside the country.
‘‘Despite elapsing of eleven days since the seizure of the huge arms and ammunitions the government has failed to come out with any satisfactory explanation and hence the need for international probe,’’ chief of Awami League and former premier Sheikh Hasina said and demanded an international probe into the seizure of arms on April 1. Mayor of Chittagong and a senior leader of her party A.B.M. Mohiuddin Chowdhury had alleged that the huge seizure of arms and ammunitions were ‘‘shipped from the USA and Pakistan to arm Indian rebels camps in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).’’
He had claimed the Indian insurgent outfits were running 50 to 60 training camps in the CHT and the weapons were brought in to arm them under ‘‘a sinister conspiracy to create unrest in the sub-continent.’’ Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR), a publicity wing of the Defence Ministry dismissed the allegation as ‘‘false, misleading and motivated’’.
