The Left Front government in West Bengal today blamed the Opposition-middle-class nexus in making the 24-hour bandh called by Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) and the CPI(M-L) a success.

SUCI had called the bandh in protest against the ‘‘anti-people policies’’ of the Centre and the Left Front government in West Bengal.

The LF leadership regretted that ‘‘this hard-earned right of the working class is being politically abused by an irresponsible combination of the Opposition and a section of middle-class who just want a holiday irrespective of who gives it to them.’’ Reacting to SUCI’s threat of longer bandhs — ‘‘48 to 72 hours after Durga Puja’’ — CPI(M) leader Biman Basu said. ‘‘They can call a bandh everyday of the year.” CPI (M) leader and Transport Minster Subhas Chakraborty said: ‘‘Since 1981 when many died during a Congress-called bandh, people prefer to stay indoors.’’
