AURANGABAD, OCT 19: Workers at the Bajaj Auto, Aluj plant, the mainstay of the local economy, stopped work on Wednesday after the management asked them to put in an additional8217; 27 minutes of work.
The strike also threatens a split in the powerful Shiv Sena led union at the plant as workers alleged that the Sena had made an underhand deal with the management to extend the working hours.
Angry workers, threw away the Bharatiya Kamgar Union Board at the entrance of the main gate of the plant and manhandled a number of Sena leaders after they learnt of the extra work they would have to put in.
The confrontation between the workers, leaders and management has snowballed to the point that a contingent of the state reserve police force has now been posted near the plant.
It was only on October 8, that the management and the union, after 33 meetings signed a new agreement specifying increased salaries and working hours.
Accordingly the workers were to work in a 7 hour 20 minutes shift and have a ten minute break. A pay hike of Rs 2,000 had been agreed upon by the union against the stipulated period of work each day.
However the management did not make its version available to the press.
