
Veteran social worker Baba Amte has been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome CMML-2, a kind of blood-related disorder resulting from ineffective formation of blood cells like RBCs, WBCs and platelets. Amte was admitted to a private hospital here last week for treatment of severe anaemia.
8220;After conducting all necessary tests on him, a team of doctors have diagnosed CMML-2 as Baba Amte8217;s ailment,8221; a press note issued by Dr Uday Mahorkar, who is treating him, said.
8220;At present he is clinically stable. He requires further hospitalisation for a week and after discharge needs life-long treatment of antibiotics and blood transfusion,8221; the press note further said.
When contacted, Dr Mahorkar told The Indian Express, 8220;It is a kind of leukemia in which all kinds of cells like RBCs, WBCs and platelets are formed grossly inadequately.8221;
Over the past few years, 93-year-old Baba had required frequent hospitalisation.
Having been decorated with several awards, including the Damien Dutton, Magsaysay, UN Human Rights, Templeton, Right Livelihood and Gandhi Peace Prize, for his service to leprosy patients, Baba8217;s projects in the backward Chandrapur and Gadchiroli district are well known.
