Ship dumps immigrants on beach

SANDSPIT, CANADA: A mystery ship dumped about 150 passengers, presumed to be illegal immigrants from Korea, near a beach on Canada8217;s remote Queen Charlotte Islands, apparently forcing them to swim ashore, Canadian officials said on Wednesday. The ship then made an unsuccessful attempt to escape from pursuing Canadian Navy and Coast Guard vessels, said Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokeswoman Constable Tracey Rook, who added the passengers appeared to be Korean. She did not say whether they were from South or North Korea. They were earlier believed to be Chinese.

Singapore wants better toilet design

SINGAPORE: Better designs for toilets could encourage people to keep public facilities spotless in already clean and green Singapore, a report said Thursday. The environment ministry believes a well-designed public toilet will be easier to maintain and will motivate the public to keep those they use clean, the Straits Times said. The ministry will hold a seminaron better public toilet design and maintenance for architects, engineers, interior designers, the report said. The new initiative was unveiled Wednesday at the launch of the annual Clean Public Toilets Campaign.

A survey in May showed more public toilets in the island state were cleaner than before, but that those in food centers, markets and coffee shops had hardly improved, the report said.

China recruits married hostesses

HONG KONG: A Chinese airline has started using only married flight attendants on its US routes, following several abscondings in that country, a report said here Thursday.

China Southern Airlines has started grounding all unmarried flight attendants and began assigning married ones.

This is mainly because two flight attendants absconded in the United States of America within a year of flights to the US began from mainland China, the Hong Kong Daily News said today. It said similar flight attendants from Beijing-based Air China and Shanghai-based Eastern Airlines hadalso reportedly absconded overseas.
