Asafa Powell bettered his own world record in the 100 meters Sunday, running 9.74 seconds at the Rieti Grand Prix. The Jamaican ran the time in the second of two heats to reach the 100 metre final.
“That’s what happens when I start to listen to the coach,” said Powell, who appeared to ease before the finish line.
The heat was run with a strong tail wind, but it was below the maximum allowed by the IAAF, making the record valid. Jaysuma Saidy Ndure of Norway was second in the heat in 10.07, followed by Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis in 10.14. The final is set for later Sunday.
Powell, who has run 9.77 three times, finished third in the 100 last month at the world athletics championships in Osaka, Japan.
