An inspired Army Green team served up the first shock of the 119th Durand Cup today when they shot out Churchill Brothers, 4-3 on penalties. Regulation time in the qualifying round semi-final finished 1-1 at the Race Course ground.

The Army team stayed back and defended for nearly the entire duration of the game, and the Churchill attack line rarely found its rhythm. Even on the few occasions that the ball did find its way through the defence, the Army keeper Min Bahadur was up to the task, making a string of fine saves.

Drupesh Dessai finally gave Churchill the lead in the 68th minute, off an Odafe O Oklolie pass from the left flank into the penalty box. This, finally, sparked the Army team into a more attacking game, and in the 86th minute a free-kick just outside the box by Aji B flew straight into the goal to give them the deserved equaliser.

In the shoot-out, Bahadur gave his team an early advantage by making two fine saves from Chandan Singh and Nicholas Muyoti.

Naveen Kumar8217;s weak shot was then easily kept out by Churchill8217;s Arindam Bhattacharya to make it 3-2. Raju D put away his shot to equalise, but Aji was the hero once again, scoring Assam8217;s final spot-kick and giving his team the unlikely win.

Army men meet Asam Rifles in the final on Tuesday in search of a place in the pre-quarter final league.

In the other semi-final, XI Gorkha Brigade held Assam Rifles for over an hour, but conceded two quick goals to go down 0-2. Ajit Singh and Abel Sema scored in the 70th and 76th minute.
