For the first time, lessons learnt in armoured battles in two wars with Pakistan, and deployment during Operation Parakram, will be in focus at a joint Army conference of the Mechanised Forces in August.
The conference, to be held at Army Headquarters on August 12-13, is unique in that it will focus on rapid coordinated deployment of Armoured Corps and Mechanised Infantry. The Army has historically looked at the two separately. This time, it will discuss how the two can be deployed in any situation in less than 10 days.
Army chief General J.J. Singh, who as GOC-in-C of the Army Training Command (ARTRAC), made major contributions to the new doctrine, will address the conference on August 13.
Being held in the middle of the Army doctrinal concept tests being carried out in the Western sector, the conference will also discuss a plan to introduce better technology and make mechanised forces capable of fighting at night. A restructuring of the Armoured Corps’ 60 regiments could also be part of the agenda.
A senior Army officer said, “Historically, mechanised forces move at night and fight during the day. We need to be ready to fight day and night. A 24-hour battle-ready mechanised force is a priority.”
An infantry man, the Army chief is expected to stress the importance of mechanised forces in a conventional war.
