Confirming that India was conducting a survey of the Finger Area in northern Sikkim that had been claimed by China, Army Chief Deepak Kapoor asserted that the region falls within Indian territory and 8220;we can do survey and patrolling in the area as we have been doing it for years8221;.

While the Army Chief said surveys were a 8220;normal exercise8221;, Minister of State for Defence M M Palam Raju said India and China were responsible neighbours and would bilaterally sort out any border-related issues.

8220;We have a strong neighbour in China. As responsible neighbours, if there is any issue we will sort it out,8221; the minister said.

General Kapoor, however, sought to downplay the issue by saying this was not unusual as 8220;we are carrying out such exercises in other places8221;. 8220;Surveys are normal exercises. Surveys along the border are continuing at a lot of places,8221; he added.

As first reported by The Indian Express, China had staked a claim to the finger point, which is the northern-most tip of Sikkim, and had even planned to construct a road through the area.
