Last week, a woman died, citizens want parking banned, DCP Patil says he will act
The number of accidents happening on the chaotic Nashik Phata chowk is increasing by the day, the latest being S Gaikwad, a housewife and daughter hit by a two-wheeler. They were crossing the road ahead of a queue of five-seater autorickshaws waiting for passengers on the Pune-Nashik highway, this afternoon. A two-wheeler heading towards Bhosari ran into the mother-daughter duo as they suddenly popped onto the highway.
While the mother fell on the road, the daughter managed to sprint across the road. As the woman came back to her feet, she found her wrist broken and blood dripping on the road. Even as the frightened daughter screamed for help, the woman put a hanky around her broken wrist. Within seconds the hanky was soaked in the blood. They were rushed to a private hospital by an autorickshaw.
Last week, 50-year-old Lalabai Shinde was walking along the road in the small side margin left by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) when a state transport bus hit her. Her relative said despite Lalabai waving to the bus to stop, it first zoomed past the red signal and then hit the woman.
Municipal Commissioner Asheesh Sharma said the traffic police should look into the matter.
Residents say almost every day, some mishap takes place at the spot. Civic activists have been demanding that parking of private cars, jeeps, three-seater autorickshaws, five-seater autorickshaws and luxury buses be banned in the entire chowk.
Both traffic police and the PCMC have not responded so far. Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Manoj Patil said he would personally visit the chowk and ensure that some discipline . Bhosari police inspector Mohan Vidhate said that though the traffic police is supposed to look into this, he will also help in bringing traffic discipline at the chowk. Over two months ago, Newsline had taken up the issue with PCMC city engineer Eknath Ugile. When asked about the compensation to the dead and injured, Ugile refused to comment.
