
Days after the Executive Council of Aligarh Muslim University sought Z category security for V-C P K Abdul Aziz, a delegation led by Aziz met Human Resource Minister Arjun Singh on Monday.
The delegation apprised him of the recent incidents of violence, including the murder of a student and subsequent arson and torching of the V-C8217;s lodge and other installations, on the varsity campus. It also presented the council8217;s resolution to the minister asking for Central Government forces for security of the university and the V-C.
The HRD Minister has agreed to the need for providing immediate security cover and directed that sine die closure of the university be used as an opportunity to cleanse its campus, said a press release from the university. The minister has also instructed ministry officials to process the university8217;s request for early deployment of the forces in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs, added the release.
Meanwhile, the university administration has also suspended 17 students who were booked for violence and arson on the campus. In an FIR lodged by the police, the students were booked for ransacking the Vice-Chancellor8217;s lodge and other offices of the university. 8220;The aforesaid acts allegedly committed by them amount to gross misconduct on their part and are in flagrant violation of the students8217; conduct and disciplinary rules, 1985,8221; the release said.
