: BJP MLA Lakshmi Kanta Chawla sorted to know from the Punjab government why it preferred English over Hindi which was a foreign language. Speaking here today, she said Punjab government decided to introduce English from first standard in the government schools but why was it partial with Hindi. She said Hindi should be made a compulsory language.

: India should be prepared to face any challenge from Pakistan, said Satpal Mahajan, member of the national council of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In a press release here today, he said the prevailing unrest in the Pakistan might force it to attack India. He described the nuclear test conducted by Pakistan as “unfortunate and it will result in arms race between the two neighbouring countries”.

ROOPNAGAR
: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is slated to visit Anandpur Sahib on June 4. Disclosing this to the press here today, Deputy Commissioner Kulbir Singh Sidhu said the CM would lay the foundation stone of various projects related to the Tricentenary celebrations of the Khalsa Panth in April 1999. Badal would also address a public gathering, he said.

Curfew
GURDASPUR:
S.K. Sandhu, the district magistrate of Gurdaspur has ordered imposition of night curfew along the sides of the railway lines, canals, their distributors and on the Dhussi bandh on river Beas, falling in district Gurdaspur up to to the track of 150 feet. There would be strict restriction on the movement of general public. This curfew order will go on till July 27.

KHARAR
: A local journalist has written to Director General of Police, Punjab, P. C. Dogra alleging that he was being threatened by the Kharar Station House Officer (SHO) for writing against the police. In a letter to the DGP, the journalist alleged that the SHO had threatened him with dire consequences on telephone on May 21.

BATALA
: Cash and jewellery were stolen from the house of a businessman in the Gopal Nagar locality, last night. According to the police the thieves entered the house of Naresh Aggarwal by breaking the window grills and took away gold jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh and Rs 80,000 in cash. Police have registered a case.

: Punjab Excise and Taxation Commissioner Sudhir Mittal has conceded the demands of Punjab Pardesh Beopar Mandal (PPBM) that the assessment of cases up to Rs 20 lakh would be assessed from the year 92-93. In a press release here, Amritlal Jain, president of the PPBM, said in a meeting with the PPBM delegation Mittal accepted the demand to release the goods with in 24 hours if detained under section 14(B). The demands of two sureties of dealers of the same ward to release the goods have been waived off, he said.

The Haryana Panjabi Sahitya Academy celebrated the announcement of Punjabi as a second state language by observing this day as “Punjabi Divas”. At a function held at Red Bishop, the Academy honoured three story writers of the state for their works in Punjabi. Haryana Governor Mahabir Prasad gave away the awards to C.R. Moudgil, Asha Kundan and Iqbal Singh who had won the first, second and third prizes respectively. The award ceremony was presided over by Haryana Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma.
