MUMBAI, NOV 1: Village Amboli defeated ONGC 1-0 in the MDFA-conducted Harwood football league at the St Xavier8217;s ground, Parel, today. The first-half was goalless.

ONGC dictated terms in the first-half but their forwards were found wanting when it came to finding the target.

Village Amboli found the going smooth after the change of ends and found the mark in the 50th minute. A well-measured pass by Joe D8217;Sa saw Chandu Varodia beat the rival goalkeeper with a neat placement. In the other Harwood League encounter, Naval Dockyard held Sutarwar to a 1-1 draw.

Alban Almeida gave Sutarwar the lead and Praveen Goveas equalised for Naval Dockyard.

In the Division III play-off semi-finals, Wall Boys beat Bosco Strikers 2-0 and Bombay Republicans trounced Dadar Young Boys 3-0.

Neil Viegas and Bosco Lobo were the goal-getters for Wall Boys. Junad Jada, Samir Jada and Nishit Mehta scored in that order for Republicans.

St Anne8217;s champs

St Anne8217;s Orlem defeated St Stanislaus Bandra 3-2 in thefinal of the Fr Edmund Carrasco s.j. Invitational Instant hockey tournament at the Fr Donnely s.j. ground, Bandra, today.

The two finalists were locked 2-2 after regulation time and Glen D8217;Souza tilted the scales in St Anne8217;s favour when he scored a golden goal in the eighth minute.

St Anne8217;s were richer by Rs 3,000 and Stanislaus pocketed Rs 2,000.

The prestigious J S Pereira Memorial All-India Open tennis tournament, was inaugurated by Ajit Rodrigues, Trustee, Bandra Gymkhana, today.

Regular matches will commence from November 2 after theelimination rounds. The matches will be played at Practennis Andheri, Khar Gymkhana and the Bandra Gymkhana courts.

The tournament has attracted a record number of entries, approximately 600, for which a total prize-money of Rs 81,000 has been earmarked.
