Following threats from militants, multi-layered security has been planned for the Amarnath Yatra that will commence from June 11.

Special Secretary in-charge of Internal Security in the Home Ministry G S Rajagopal has already taken account of the security preparedness and Home Secretary V K Duggal, Director of Intelligence Bureau E S L Narasimhan and other officials will visit Srinagar on June 16.

CRPF Director General J K Sinha said that as the danger of militant attacks was ‘‘high’’, they were rushing in 41 CRPF companies and 23 BSF companies, which is in addition to the deployment by the Army and the state police.

Sources said that two inspector generals from paramilitary outfits would be in-charge of security of two routes—Baltal and Pahalgam—through which pilgrims reach the holy cave. Security forces are on high alert given that militants have stepped up their activities in the past few weeks.

Army will be deployed along the higher reaches of the routes so that militants are prevented from sneaking in and carrying out attacks. Sinha added that measures have also been taken for security of the camps, which would include frisking and a mode of identification for the security personnel.

Meanwhile, all vehicles carrying pilgrims will be allowed to leave the base camp at MA Stadium between 5 am to 6 am. Escorts will be provided to the vehicles up to Shaitani Nallah, said DIG (Jammu) Niaz Mehmood. The escorts will change at the Nallah. The services of NGOs are also being taken to ensure peaceful regulation of the yatra, he added.
