In town to sew up a poll pact with the DMK, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today gave a clean chit to the DMK in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Her explanation: the final report of the Jain Commission, which probed the conspiracy angle behind her husband’s assassination, had ‘‘no negative comments’’ on the DMK.

Speaking to reporters at the DMK headquarters, Sonia said: ‘‘There is some misunderstanding on the issue. Although the interim report of the Jain Commission made a few comments on some (DMK) leaders, there were no negative comments or points in the final report on the leaders.’’

‘‘How can the interim report stand when the final report exonerated the DMK?’’ she countered.

After her talks with Karunanidhi — he is to lead the alliance against the AIADMK-BJP combine — Sonia said the issue over the Congress demand for the Pondicherry Lok Sabha seat would be sorted out in a day or two. The seat, which has a sitting Congress MP, has been allotted to the PMK.

Sonia described the talks as ‘‘very good’’ and said it primarily had to do with working together to defeat the BJP and other NDA allies.

Karunanidhi described their meeting as ‘‘good and honest’’. Reminded of his 1999 utterance that the Congress was not a dependable partner, he quipped: ‘‘In politics, there will be changes as time goes by.’’
