SURAT, June 16: The last hurdle in the introduction of self-financed colleges in the region was removed on Monday, when South Gujarat University endorsed the resolution of the Academic Council recommending affiliations to Bachelor of Business Administration courses in six institutions, thereby creating 650 BBA seats. The courses will start from the this academic session.

The group led by Hoshang Mirza and Suryakant Shah was defeated by 10 votes to four every time proposals went to vote as Vice-Chancellor Ashwin Kapadia steam-rolled the opposition comfortably for the first time.

Earlier, opponents of the self-financed system tried to stall the BBA proposals by moving a local court for an order restraining the Syndicate from taking up the item. However, the suit filed by K B Patel was dismissed after the court had heard both parties. The recent nomination of four government representatives 8212; Prof Girish Rana, Anil Goel, Kishor Vaghela and Bhagwan Panchasara 8212; on the Syndicate, however, tilted the balance of power towards Kapadia.

The BBA course will be introduced in colleges run by Vapi8217;s Rofel Trust, Bardoli8217;s Arts and Commerce College, Navsari8217;s Naranlala Institute of Management Studies, Sarvajanik Education Society, Bharuch8217;s Narmada Education Society and the Amroli Arts and Commerce College in Surat.

Kapadia has convened a meeting of management representatives and principals of the various colleges to work out the modalities of the fee structure and admission policies for the BBA course. Though the Syndicate has fixed the fee structure at maximum, the meeting will ensure students are not exploited.

Incidentally, when Vapi8217;s Rofel Trust introduced the BBA course in 1996, it had fixed the fee at Rs 18,000 for general students and Rs 12,000 for backward class students. The Syndicate had asked the trust to peg the fee at Rs 250 per student and refund the rest to the students. The Syndicate resolution was challenged in the Gujarat High Court.

The managements have given an undertaking that the courses will be run on a no-profit, no-loss basis. The entire procedure will have to be completed before June 29 so that BBA admissions can start.

Monday8217;s meeting also gave the green signal for establishing the first-ever self-financed English medium commerce college in Navsari8217;s Naranlala Institute. A local inquiry committee, comprising Sunil Modi, Rasesh Shukla and Bhagwan Panchasara, has been asked to visit Navsari and submit its report within two days to allow the institute to start the course from this academic year.

The Syndicate also resolved to reconstitute the building committee, the staff standing committee, the finance committee and the unfair means committee and authorised the vice-chancellor to take all decisions in this regard. The appointment of four employees, including Registrar V B Yadav, was also endorsed at the meeting.

The meeting also decided to break the tradition of announcing the results of examinations like M Phil and Ph D only after the Syndicate had cleared them. A resolution stated that henceforth the results would be announced first and the Syndicate formally informed later.

The other resolutions that were passed by the Syndicate included allowing admissions to 23 standard XII students who passed out of SNDT University8217;s Vanita Vishram College to First Year B Com and the addition of 10 more payment seats to MSc chemistry.
