Akali members demanding action against Union Minister of State for Non-resident Affairs Jagdish Tytler in the wake of the Nanavati report, forced an adjournment of the Lok Sabha today.
Led by Sukhbir Singh Badal and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, they stood on their seats as soon as the House reassembled after lunch. They were joined by BJP members. Badal argued that several thousand Sikhs had been massacred, but an attempt was afoot to shield the guilty.
He also made a remark about the Congress, which was expunged from the record by Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal following an objection by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Ghulam Nabi Azad.
When some Congress members also started speaking simultaneously, the Akalis walked into the well shouting, 8216;8216;Sikhan de katil murdabad.8217;8217; The BJP members lent their lung-power from their seats to their Akali allies, though one of them, Avinash Khanna, belonging to Punjab, joined the Akalis in the well. Atwal adjourned the House for 45 minutes.
After proceedings were resumed, the House functioned normally as the Akalis failed to show up.
