In a stunning admission, Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh has said it is only a matter of weeks before he announces his review report of his party8217;s three-year alliance with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Singh said, 8220;We are at the consulting stage at the moment with district units of our party. We are talking to leaders from both western and eastern UP to assess the ground situation and then evolve a strategy for alliance for the coming polls in February 2007. We will come to a decision soon.8221;

Singh was equally candid about the fate of the SP-led coalition government in the state, if he withdrew support. 8220;Yes, the government can fall but how does it matter as elections are barely a few months away,8221; he said.

Ajit Singh was only explaining what has been going around in political circles for several months 8212; that he has cut a deal with the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre for a position in the Union Cabinet. In return, he will pull out support to the Congress8217; rival, the SP, bring the government down, and usher in President8217;s Rule in the state. None of SP8217;s political rivals want an election under the charge of Mulayam, say sources.

8220;The whole idea of alliances is to see which party can strengthen the RLD more. I would imagine it is based on three criteria 8212; the party8217;s policies, its vote bank and whether it has an organisational structure. We are investigating all of these,8221; said Singh.

The RLD leader, however, said he was not closing any option, even admitting his alliance with the SP was still open. 8220;I am not saying anything about the future. We could go it alone too.8221;
