Actor Sunil Shetty granted bail in cheque-bounce case

Bollywood actor Sunil Shetty was granted bail in a cheque-bounce case by a lower court in the city on Tuesday. The actor surrendered in the district courts today after non-bailable warrants were issued against him on November 19. He was granted bail today after an application was moved in.

The next hearing is slated to be on December 23 when the actor will again appear in the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class Manisha Jain. The actor made a brief appearance in the courts around 4 pm to surrender and seek bail. He was asked to furnish bail bonds of Rs 50,000. Wearing a pair of blue jeans and a black shirt, the actor8217;s presence in the court generated quite an excitement.

The actor also furnished a surety bond in the name of a Sector- 43 resident.

On November 19, the court issued non-bailable warrants after the actor failed to appear before the court in the case, which was filed by a local businessman as his cheque of Rs 1 million bounced.

Shetty had sought exemption from personal appearance, but the court rejected the plea. The court of Judicial Magistrate first class Manisha Jain then issued a non-bailable warrant against Shetty.

Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had stayed the trial court proceedings after Shetty had moved in a petition. However, the high court vacated the stay and asked Shetty to appear before the court during the case hearing.

Subash Gulati, owner of Empire Store in Sector 17, had filed a complaint against Shetty in 2005 alleging that a cheque issued by Shetty8217;s company had bounced.

A cheque of Rs 1 million was issued by the Hyundai India Telecom Limited HITL, Chennai, to Subash Gulati had bounced due to insufficient funds in the bank account of the company. During the launch of the company in 2004, there were eight directors and Suniel Shetty was one of them.

In his petition filed in November 2006, Shetty had denied any connection with HITL.

However, Gulati said that he had entered into an agreement to distribute mobile phone handsets manufactured by HITL after attending a launch party in November 2004, where Shetty and other directors were present.
