MUMBAI, February 24: The Archdiocesan Board of Education ABE does not quite know what to make of the government8217;s recent statement on the Pre-School Act before the Bombay High Court. The state government has reportedly decided not to implement the Maharashtra Pre-school Centres Regulations of Admission Act, 1996, this year, and schools are free to go ahead with individual admissions.
A submission to this effect was made by the State Advocate General, C J Sawant to the division bench of Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice A P Shah on February 16. The bench was hearing a petition filed by Nishit Dhruv and other parents who challenged the Pre-school Act.
However, the ABE has received no official directives from the state government on the present status of the Pre-school Act. Consequently, no decision has been taken by the Bishops of Maharashtra either, said ABE secretary, Father Denis Pereira. Till then, admissions to Catholic schools, which are under the ABE, will not begin.
The secretary to school education, Rameshchandra Kanade told Express Newsline that the government has not issued any directives as yet. Advocate General Sawant reportedly said the state government has decided to postpone the implementation of the Act, leaving schools free to admit students as they did last year. According to Mantralaya sources, Advocate Sawant8217;s statement hasn8217;t been understood completely. The Act is not in operation, and as and when it will be implemented, admissions which have already been will not be disturbed, claimed sources.
School Education Minister Sudhir Joshi has reiterated that the Act8217;s implementation will depend on the support of his party MLAs.
