Chennai, July 21: AIR India struck two goals within the last five minutes of the first half and sealed the fate of national champions Indian Railways in the 76th All India Madras Cricket Club-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey Tournament, at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Tuesday. The victory puts Air India on top of Pool A with seven points for a place in the semifinals.

In an earlier match, Tamil Nadu trailing by a first-half goal rallied brilliantly to down Indian Hockey Federation Colts XI 4-1. With an all-win record in Pool D, Tamil Nadu have also qualified and will take on Indian Airlines in the other semifinal.

Railways forced four penalty corners but did nothing worthwhile. In the last quarter of the match, it was Air India on the defensive.

Air India8217;s attack was spearheaded by Gagan Ajit Singh, son of Ajit Singh, captain of the 8217;72 Olympics team. The first blow came in the 30th minute. Gagan found the boards off a reverse flick, following a pass from Amar Aiyamma. Two minutes later, AirIndia8217;s Rajesh Chauhan converted a corner.

MUMBAI ON A SCORING SPREE: Mumbai walloped Gujarat 10-1 in Pool C to record the highest number of goals. They are better placed to qualify from this pool. The scorers for Mumbai were Dhanraj Pillai 3, Ravi Nayakar 2, Claes Ferreira 2, Cheops D8217;Costa, Gavin Ferreira and Sabu Varkey. Shashi Gorade scored the lone goal for losers.
