The residents of Chandigarh are in a state of panic after six snatching incidents at knifepoint shook the city on Thursday. The spree of snatchings by “two youths in a white Maruti car” in the last 36 hours has also exposed the failure of the police. Officers are now banking on intelligence inputs from the CID to get a tip-off about the snatchers.
The Chandigarh Police held several meetings on Friday to discuss measures to curb the menace.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) S S Srivastava chaired a meeting of all station house officers in his office and issued strict instructions to put a check on the snatching spree. He asked the officers to be present at checkposts and intensify night patrolling.
“The police are supposed to setup checkposts in various parts of the city soon after a snatching incident is reported. The two youths in the white Maruti car continued targeting people for almost 24 hours, from 10 pm on Wednesday to 9.30 pm on Thursday, but the police failed to nab them,” said a resident.
The SSP said they had intensified the vigil and set up various checkposts in the city. “Intelligence inputs have been sought from the CID about the snatchers on the prowl. The miscreants will be nabbed very soon and we will put a full stop to the incidents,” he assured.
