The global financial meltdown and the growing anti-cracker campaign resulted in a dip in sale of crackers this Diwali. This was a big letdown for the wholesale as well as the retail traders who are unhappy with the way things have taken a turn this year.
8220;The sales were at least 30 to 40 per cent down this year as compared to the last. There were less customers even on Diwali when a huge crowd is normally expected. Last year, I recorded a 100 per cent sale, but the stocks are piled up this year. The customers said inflation has already made a hole in their pocket and they are not ready to spend a single penny on crackers,8221; said Pritpal Singla of Singla Firework in Sector 20.
While retailers repent over their leftover stock, wholesale traders are an equally worried lot as they, too, recorded a 40 per cent dip in sales this year.
8220;I anticipated the dip and ordered less crackers this Diwali, and even those were not sold. People refrained from buying deafening crackers this year but chakris were in demand,8221; said Sunil Malik of Laxmi Fireworks in Sector 34.
8220;While the global financial crisis is the basic reason, people also refrained from burning crackers owing to the growing anti-cracker campaign. Also, the barricade constructed by the police in Sector 22, discouraged many people from entering the market,8221; said Arvind Jain, president, Market Association, Sector 22.
